Elyar Fox - A Billion Girls

Former YouTube cover artist Elyar Fox is back with his second single, the follow up to one of my favourite songs of last year, ‘Do It All Over Again.’ The song was pop perfection and earned him a top five hit. Unfortunately this song, titled ‘A Billion Girls’, is a massive downgrade.

Less-than-perfect vocals, tired song writing and lazy production come together to create what RCA UK thought was an appropriate second single. This isn’t surprising, however, as they demonstrated with Union J how incompetent they are when it comes to establishing a new artist. The track has a cool hook but that’s all it has.

'Ten Feet Tall' is the third single from Dutch DJ Afrojack's upcoming first studio album. It's right on the current EDM/pop trend: piano assisted verses with huge anthemic choruses.

The vocals are where the song really shines. They’re provided by the relatively unknown singer/songwriter ’Wrabel’. His vocals aren’t typical for a dance track but they work well in this case.

To create an awesome dance song you need great vocals and a great beat/drop. When the beat drops in this song you can’t help but feel a little disappointed. It’s isn’t bad, but it’s not great and doesn’t quite seal the deal.

That being said this is still a pretty cool track and a sign of good things to come if Afrojack’s album ever see’s the light of day.

Hot Chelle Rae - Don’t Say Goodnight

Hot Chelle Rae’s last album, 2011’s ‘Whatever’ was an underrated pop gem with the hits ‘Tonight Tonight’ & ‘I Like It Like That’. For the next era, they attempted to maintain their success by doing the exact same thing, releasing ‘Hung Up’, a song that could have easily been from their 2011 sophomore album. Strangely, they didn’t pull that strategy off and ‘Hung Up’ flopped. Now it’s time to try again.

'Don't Say Goodnight' is a slightly different sound for the group - it's an attempt at a mid-tempo party anthem similar to 'We Own The Night' by The Wanted. Unfortunately that song flopped, their album flopped, the band were dropped by their label and broke up soon after . Understandably I don't see much good in Hot Chelle Rae's future when it comes to this track or the fate of their upcoming third album.

JTR - Ride

JTR is a Swedish/Australian boy band that placed seventh on The X Factor Australia. During their X-Factor time they showed promise but didn’t hit all the right notes every week. Now they’re releasing an album independently, titled ‘Touchdown’. ‘Ride’ is the first single from that album and it has been one of the best independent single releases I’ve ever seen. With the power of a tween fan base and music business parents behind them they have managed to push their single with promotion on radio and television.

Now to the song. It’s the kind of track that makes you want to buy a convertible so you can sing along with the roof down. The catchy but typical pop-band tune is reminiscent of Hot Chelle Rae and should slot right in on radio . Wind the windows down and get bopping.

5 Seconds Of Summer - She Looks So Perfect

A spot on a One Direction tour is apparently the ultimate promo. A relatively unknown pop-rock band from Sydney, Australia going #1 on the iTunes album charts in the UK and in about 40 other countries on pre-orders for this song is insane for an artist with no previous hit singles.

Now, signed with Capitol Records they’re gearing up for their first major album release and it’s starting off with “She Looks So Perfect”. It’s got a great hook, some good vocals and is an all-round cool song - but…

It’s 2014, and the song’s production is very 2004. It’s a little bit pop, a little bit punk but it’s mostly rock and it’s chances on radio could be a little slim. If they can get that pop-rock mix right like The Vamps have then they’ll have a fighting chance but I’m not sure with this single.
